Last week, area legislators Senator Kim, Representative Mizuno and I met with Department of Transportation Services (DTS) Chief Engineer Mark Kikuchi, Principal Momi Akana of Keiki O Ka Aina Preschool, NB Chair Michael McDonald and Past Chair Chris Wong to discuss next steps in pursuing release of the 2016 appropriation for improvements to the Kalihi Street S-Curve.
In view of our collective support for the release of FY 18 City funds before the lapsing deadline of June 30, 2018, Mr. Kikuchi agreed to pursue a response from the City administration regarding meetings with the Mayor, Managing Director or others from the administration.
We have also asked Department of Transportation Services to provide guidance on the next steps for Keiki o Ka Aina Preschool to pursue for a privately-initiated pedestrian walkway over its property (e.g., surveying and identification of the area to be utilized, and establishment of an easement between the preschool and City) to help address the pedestrian safety issue.
As noted during the February 2018 NB meeting, DTS will complete installation of additional signage and pavement markings to improve driver awareness and visibility of the roadway in April 2018. My staff and I will be working with DTS and Keiki o Ka Aina on next steps for the privately-initiated pedestrian walkway.
