The Department of Transportation Services (DTS) has posted the preliminary concept designs for Complete Streets improvements on Liliha Street and Nuuanu Avenue online this month. These draft concepts were presented by SSFM consultants during the December 5-12, 2017 outreach meetings, and include designs for Liliha Street between School Street and Wyllie Street, and two alternative designs for Nuuanu that feature roundabouts or traffic signalization at major intersections.
In December, many Nuuanu residents raised concerns about the transparency of the outreach process, citing the unavailability of these proposals to the public. Many concerns also centered on the addition of bike lanes at the expense of street parking for residents on Nuuanu Avenue. SSFM’s representative stated that an “Alternative 3” would be developed for Nuuanu Avenue that omits bicycle lanes and focuses on pedestrian improvements, which will be available at a later date.

team is also continuing to accept community input on these conceptual designs and will present their revised concepts to the community during Spring 2018; please send your comments to completestreets@ honolulu.gov if you would like to submit your feedback.
