Last December, Alewa Heights neighbor representatives, area legislators and I met with Department of Community Services (DCS) Director Gary Nakata to seek an update on the department’s plans for future uses of the Na Pueo Park facility. Neighbors expressed concerns about the lack of responses to the department’s 2015 Request for Proposals, which identified uses that area neighbors were supportive of. Director Nakata and his staff agreed to check on(a)whether or not the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) would be willing to assume control of the facility for community recreational purposes, and (b) whether the local office of U.S. Department of Housing (HUD) would allow the City to reimburse HUD for CDBG funds used to develop the facility.
DCS Director Nakata also agreed to brief the community on the answers to the two questions, and we hope that the department will brief the community on its plans during the May 2016 neighborhood board meeting. We have recently received several complaints about overgrowth and maintenance concerns involving the Na Pueo facility.
