The City Council adopted Resolution 15-312, which requests the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to develop an updated master plan for Makiki District Park, during the December 9th City Council meeting.
As reported previously, the resolution encouraged area legislators, neighborhood board members, and City/State agencies to convene community forums to solicit feedback on the types of improvements that the Makiki community would like to incorporate in an updated master plan. During the past two years, state legislators appropriated planning funds to incorporate Makiki Library into the Hawaii State Library system and to renovate or update the existing facility to meet an enhanced range of uses.
As part of our preparations for a community forum later in the spring, we are researching the best ways for City and State agencies to jointly develop and manage shared facilities within the Makiki District Park area. We have also requested rough cost estimates from the City Department of Design and Construction for an updated master plan, including provisions for improved linkages between nearby Cartwright Field and Makiki District Park.
