Last May, we received complaints regarding overgrowth in the City-owned portion of Aiea Stream, adjacent to the Aiea Shopping Center. Residents reported that the accumulated overgrowth and debris have created a flood hazard during heavy rains, and asked the City to clear the overgrowth. In June, Department of Facility Maintenance’s Road Division reported that a service request had been initiated to clean the stream bed, and work would commence when the required permits were approved. To date, the department has not obtained the necessary permit from the Army Corps of Engineers, which have jurisdiction for streams and waterways. My staff and I are asking Congressman Takai’s office to assist us in seeking a timetable to obtain the permit before heavy rains resume this year. Please contact Roelle Torres of my staff at 768-5071 if you have any additional questions or concerns.
