Last month, we received several questions regarding changes that Honolulu Police Department (HPD) had adopted for its firearm application process. Constituents were concerned about changes to the medical clearance requirement, where updated forms appeared to infer mental instability conditions that could be used to deny applications.
I asked HPD asking for an explanation of any changes to the firearms application process, and HPD reported that no procedural changes were made to the firearms application process. The current procedure includes a signed medical release form and a letter from an applicant’s physician stating his/her professional opinion of the applicant.
With respect to changes involving medical clearance forms, I have been advised that several medical providers have adopted policy changes that may impose additional requirements. Please contact HPD at 529-3111 if you have any additional questions or for more information.
