I’m happy to report that the Department of Parks and Recreation is working in partnership with Hawaii Theatre to improve safety and maintenance at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Park. The Department of Parks and Recreation will partner with the Hawaii Theatre to enforce park closure hours after fencing is installed around the perimeter of the park and to ensure the safety of park users. During the past summer, Department of Parks and Recreation removed the water features in this park and will reduce the size of the concrete electrical/water structure near the back of the park to complete its work to restore the park to a more attractive passive park setting.
The administration is now scheduling release of the City Council’s appropriation of $250,000 for the design and construction of the fence, while Hawaii Theatre will provide security and assist in park maintenance. Before construction begins, the Hawaii Theatre will work with social service organizations to encourage those homeless individuals on the park perimeter to relocate to more permanent housing.
